CHARLES DICKENS PROYECT

 BIOGRAPHY:

He was a british writer who was born in 1812 and he died in 1870. Charles Dickens was the second of eight children in a poor family. When he was 12 years old his father was in a prison. Because of this, Charles was forced to work in a warehouse to help support the family. This experience left profound efffects on him.

 At 15, his normal education ended and he found employment as an office boy, while he studied shorthand at night. In 1833 Dickens began to contribute short stories and essays to periodicals. 

A Dinner at Popular Walk was his first published story. Dickens's first book, a collection of stories titled Sketches by Boz(it was his pseudonym),was published in 1836.

He married Catherine Hogarth, the daughter of an important editor. Together they had 10 children before they separated in 1858.

Although Dickens's main profession was as a novelist, he continued his journalistic work until the end of his life. The Posthumans Papers of the Pickwick Club became one of the most popular works of the time. After it, Charles embarked on a full-time career as a novelist publishing other novels like Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, The Chimes...

In the closing years of his life Dickens worsened his health. He retreated to Gad's Hill and began to work in a proyect, which was never completed.

Charles Dickens died at home, in 1870, after suffering a stroke.

SOCIETY:

The society of England was getting industrialized and machinery occupied the top priority in national life. Industralization gave rise to conflict between the capital and the labor. These aspects are described in Hard Times, a Dickens novel. It shows a period of economic depression with food shortage, low wage and unemployment. The lives of the people were restricted.

STYLE:

His priority was to relay a message, but as writer he was also interested in create beautiful prose. His writing style was detailed. He used exaggeration in description and metaphor, simile and frequently repeated words. This made it easier for people to read and understand his work and also made it mor memorable. Charles Dickens experimented with different genres, but most of them were all critical of the industrial revolution. He lived a golden time of peace but was quite aware of poverty within the country. Much of his work is a heavily descriptive view into what life was like in 19th century in England.

Whisper- to speak very quietly, using the breath but not the voice.

Feather-one of the many soft, light things that cover a bird's body.

Pavement-a path with a hard surface, on one or boths sides of a road, that people walk on.

Lonely-unhappy because you are not with other people.

Asleep-sleeping or not awake.

Mood-the way you feel at a particular time.

SCHOOL IN CORONAVIRUS TIMES

📌 On March 12, a new phase began for all of us. A virus called COVID-19🦠 arrived in Spain and the classes were cancelled. I never thought I could learn so many things at home and with my computer💻. This has been going on for three months. Little by little we adapted to this new normality. I've missed my classmates, teachers, and breaks 👩‍🏫. I hope we go back to school next year, although I'll miss Cristina and Abby.💖

BUSKAID

Buskaid runs a Music School in Soweto, teaching violin, viola, cello and double bass to more than eighty young musicians aged between 4 and 25. Funds for the School are raised through charitable trusts in South Africa, the USA and the UK. In addition, Buskaid has supported students from the Music School who have been successful in gaining places for tertiary study at music college in the UK.
Buskaid is a unique initiative. Its aim is to give young people from Soweto the opportunity to explore and fulfil their musical potential, through high quality tuition on the violin, viola, cello and double bass at the Buskaid Music School. This has the added benefit of improving their educational and social prospects, and transforming their whole local community.

It was founded in 1992 by British viola player Rosemary Nalden in response to an item on the BBC's Today programme highlighting the difficulties of a group of young string players in Diepkloof, Soweto.

MY RECIPE FROM THAILAND

TOM KHA GAI (CHICKEN COCONUT SOUP)

                       This silky and aromatic soup is a complete meal in a bowl.

INGREDIENTS:

-1 Piece of ginger

-10 kaffir lime leaves

-6 cups low-sodium chicken broth

-1 lb. skinless,boneless chicken thighs

-8 oz. shiitake,oyster or maitake mushrooms

-13.5-oz. coconut milk

-2 Tbsp. fish sauce

-1 tsp. sugar

-2 stalks fresh lemongrass,tough outer layers removed

-Chili oil,cilantro leaves with tender stems, and lime wedges (for serving)

RECIPE PREPARATION:

1)Using the back of a knife, lightly smash lemongrass and ginger;cut lemongrass into 4" pieces.

2)Bring lemongrass,ginger,lime leaves, and broth to a boil in a large saucepan.

3)Reduce heat and simmer until flavors are melded,8-10 minutes.

4)Strain broth into clean saucepan;discard solids.

5)Add chicken and return to a boil.

6)Reduce heat,add mushrooms, and simmer, skimming occasionally, until chicken is cooked through and mushrooms are soft, 20-25 minutes.

7)Mix in coconut milk, fish sauce and sugar.

8)Divide soup among bowls.

9)Serve with chili oil, cilantro and lime wedges.
